maystone: (OMG Lost by Lee)
ABC re-aired the last episodes of Lost before the big final season begins next week. Psyched! So. Freakin'. PSYCHED. I don't want to wish my life away, but really . . . next Tuesday can't come soon enough.

I slept the morning away (mostly), and I'm feeling better for it. I'm still having more than usual balance problems - don't know what the hell that's about - but overall it's going better today than yesterday. Can't argue with that.

We had a few days of above-freezing temperatures, but today winter came back with plummeting temps and snow. I was so thankful that I didn't have to be on the road in this weather. I'm always happy when winter is behind us, but even more so now I anxiously await the return of clear, dry roads.

The odds are good that I'll be getting some short-term copy editing/proofreading jobs through the graphics firm where Mark works. I'm excited about bringing in some money, no matter how short-term the job may end up being. I've been doing some editing and proofing for Deb and her business, and while I'm happy to help, it's all been voluntary. It'll be good to be able to contribute some cash to the household eventually.

I'm going to grit my teeth and watch the State of the Union address tomorrow. Never have I seen a president throw away such promise so quickly. But I'll be there.

It was a beautiful day even with the occasional thunder storms. I spent most of the day outside, and it felt sublime to be working without wearing seventy layers of clothes and without the cold and the wind trying to beat me down.

Because the weather was so good, it was the perfect time to start on all those projects that have been building up. First and foremost was to replace our bedraggled, beat up, duct-taped mailbox. It was in such bad shape that Canada Post actually contacted us and told us that we had 10 days to replace it with something up to code or else they'd stop delivering our mail. The nerve! Heh. So off we went to Home Hardware and purchased us a shiny new mailbox, and then we spent about an hour ripping down the old one, rebracing everything, assembling the new jobbie. Before and after pictures are posted at [livejournal.com profile] pic365 if you're interested.

Next up (for me at least) was attacking the secondary poo pile that built up right outside the barn. We have the true poo pile a bit away from the barn and the paddocks, but the snow got so deep that we couldn't get to it, so we started one right in the paddock. It's a pretty big pile (I was contemplating posting a picture, but I took pity on y'all), so cleaning it up called for . . . a pitchfork! I have my very own pitchfork, and I am one happy woman. Now the problem is that the ground is so muddy I need a contraption to haul it all away. I really need a wagon of some sort.

The big news, maybe, possibly, is that Gertie may be getting ready to birth her cria. yay! And yikes! It's notoriously difficult to track when an alpaca's breeding takes. If you recall, everyone was completely taken by surprise when Adama showed up because no one even knew that Conchita had been pregnant - and that was with multiple vet visits and an ultrasound! So if the date of Gertie's first breeding is correct, and if it took immediately, she'd be due right about now. For the past two days she's been acting differently, and the other alpacas are treating her a bit differently, so we're on the lookout for a little cria to appear soon. Oh boy! Well, hopefully it's a girl, but you get the idea :)

The vet is coming over tomorrow to take some blood from our current crias Delilah and Adama; they need to be tested for BVDV before we can show them at the big alpaca show next month. We also need to halter train them. That should be fun. So all in all another busy day is on tap. And the weather is supposed to be even better than today. Yes!

The only not-so-good thing today was that I found out some more info about that job working the deafblind, and it's very different from what I thought it was going to be. I got a call back and was offered a casual position because of my visa status, but then she went on to tell me that the duties included personal care such as bathing the residents (three 19-year-old males) and changing their diapers. I declined, and she understood. It's not even a gender thing; there are some people who can deal with that kind of close care (my friend, Robin, is one of them), but I am not one of them. So, that job is off the list for me. I'm still waiting to hear from my former employer. Here's hoping that it goes more smoothly, eh.

Tomorrow will be warm and sunny. Warm and sunny. I may be too giddy to sleep.

The seminar was very informative. Boiled down to its essence we came out with 1) all alpacas are either red or black (even the white ones), and 2) to achieve color correction, breed to a full dark color. Easy, no?

I'm still tired and very achey, so I'll be resorting to numbers as I jump around.

1. My hair is ridiculous. I've grown to dislike the cut, and the dye job went very, very wrong. I have two-tiered hair color: bright red on top and auburn from mid-temple down. If I had the money, I'd go to a salon and have all of the color stripped and then start again. Dar thinks she knows of a way to tone it down and redye it ash brown. We'll see.

2. I finally got to see Niagara Falls. ) Pretty what with the spray and the rainbows, but I was bit underwhelmed. I think I as expecting the Grand Canyon with water - something immense, you know? The horrifying and cramped "amusement" section left the biggest impression; it was without a doubt the tackiest couple of blocks of real estate I have ever seen. And I've been to both Las Vegas and Nogales.

3. I may have a contract job with my former employer. It's looking pretty good, in fact. They've been dicking around building this new software for about four years now, and the new company owners have said enough is enough. They have a July 1 deadline to get it up and running, so my old boss has been authorized to hire 3 or 4 contractors. We talked on Friday, and he's up for it. If not that position, they're also hiring QA contractors. I think one way or another I'll have a job there for a couple of months.

4. I also got a call back from that deafblind independent living place. I have to call them tomorrow. I doubt I'll get that one because of my work visa situation, but I could be in place to be hired as a casual employee come September when my full visa kicks in.

5. We stayed at the Skank Motel on Friday night. The area we where the seminar was being held is small town western NY, so there wasn't much happening with the motels. We drove around literally for hours and saw only two motels, and the one we ended up with was the better one (according to the locals), which kind of blew our minds. It had to be 60 years old at least, paper thin walls whitewashed except for the two-inch border of dirt along the bottom and the holes along the corners. Dar turned the TV on and up popped the porn channel. Free porn! Not nearly as exciting as you might think. We were, "Give me a break. Where's the Home & Garden channel?" No such luck. Porn, yes; HG, no. No clock, alarm or otherwise. Two little lamps with dim bulbs. Filthy bathroom floor. Running toilet. The door was so sticky that you had to shove it open and closed. The guys in the room next to us took easily 20 minutes to unload their van, apparently carrying one piece in a time. Open the van door, slam the van door, open the room door, slam the room door. Repeat until Lee is ready to kill you.

The bed was like rock. There were two wafer-thin pillows and no extra blankets. We slept with our clothes on and on top of the covers. I took a sleeping pill and conked out, but Dar awoke in the middle of the night because the cats were scratching to get into the room. Except, as she suddenly realized, the cats were 500 miles away and what the hell was scratching at the door! Aiiiiiieeeee!

It was a wonderful night.

6. There was one Dunkin' Donuts in town. They made some of the worst coffee I've ever had. I was heartbroken. Dunkin' Donuts, y'all! I'm sure it was just that franchise, but it's not like I get to drink DD every day.

7. I've attempted to make a hanging hay feeder for the alpacas by cutting holes in one of those lightweight mesh clothes hampers and filling it with hay. Scared the crap out of them. Heh. The crias finally started coming around to smell it and such, but they never did get that they could eat the hay that's in it. I hung it out of the way in the barn in an area that they don't need to get into (i.e., not the poo area, not where the water bucket is), and I'll see what it looks like in the morning.

And now I go to dig out my resume. BSG finale tonight! Rome finale tonight! I guess I should also stock up some kleenex while I'm at it.

It snowed like a son of a bitch this morning; what with the wind, it ended up drifting and I ended up shoveling a bit. The storm moved through quickly and the temps rose a bit, so now the roads are mostly wet or slushy, although the skies are that awful glaring, depressing gray that hurts to look at.

Like the lady said: "Someone needs to shoot that groundhog."

Dar is sick, so that's never good news. She started feeling poorly yesterday, and it really hit her today. She insisted on doing the alpacas this morning, and she's been abed every since. Stubborn, stubborn woman.

My sinus infection seems to be coming under control; I no longer feel as if I'm going to drown from the steady river of crap draining from my sinuses and down my throat. It was doing no great favors to my asthma, either, but I'm very happy to be able to say that that finally seems to be settling down as well. At the worst of the sinus infection, I had to take some ventilin, but that was Saturday morning. I haven't had to use it since then. ::vigorous knocking of wood ensues::

I took myself to the mall earlier today and got my hairs cut off. The stylist and I had my usual communication issues, and I left with something other than what I wanted but with the potential to grow out to what I was hoping it would be. Dar really likes it; I'm going to have to wait a week or so. I don't hate it (well, except for the short bangs), and I think it'll settle down pretty quickly.

My hair color is intersting now. He cut enough off so that almost all of the color from my various dye jobs is gone. Any that is left is right on the tips, so that means that most of it is my true color. And that is . . . kind of a rose gray, I guess. I have loads of silver in my hair now, but the strands are so fine that it doesn't look gray except around the temples. There? I am the Bride of Frankenstein :) But other wise, it's kind of a muted red. Ashes of Roses, I believe is the color I've seen attached to it. As I said, interesting.

The reason I broke down and spent the money on this is because I'm going to a job fair tomorrow. Yay! The jobs are being offered at the Independent Living Residences for the Deafblind in Ontario; this is a new program in the area, and they're looking for team leaders and "intervenors" - and they're willing to train. I've already had experience in this field; it was many years ago, but I think I'm still ahead of the game as far the local application pool goes. The biggest stumbling block is that my current work visa prohibits me from working outside of my current job, but I hope to convince them to a) hire me as a contractor through the Longshadow Group which will mean that they can circumvent the visa problem or b) hire me in September when my unrestricted work visa takes effect or c) see if there's some sort of dispensation available that I'm not aware of since they're desperate for qualified people. Whichever, wish me luck with it, please.

And now, I'm off to wrangle some alpacas.
