Rovings are an interim step between raw fleece and yarn. Hand-spinners use rovings to spin their own yarn. You can also use rovings to knit or crochet with.

FYI, these all started out as a peachy salmon color. In fact, they're the rovings that Pixel was lounging around on in that pic of her I posted a few days ago. Dar can do wonderful things with hot water, powdered dyes, and vinegar :)

Hey, sweetie! Spinning - very cool! Do you have spinning wheel or are you using a drop spindle? (I sound like I know what I'm talking about, don't I? Heh.) I love the clothing styles from the 40s, and I can't figure out why they haven't come back into style. Much more flattering than the 50s styles, too. Of course you'll have to post a pic of your finished sweater. Really, have to :)

No spinning wheel - drop spindle to start. when i settle somewhere maybe i will be able to get a wheel... but the drop spindle is working well now! And you totally sound like you know what you are talking about! fiber knowledge osmosis?

And this is probably not going to be done for a very long while... but I will! i really should update my knitting blog... but i am spinning way more than knitting these days... i love 40s sweaters, this book is going to result in many, i hope!

And I am really hoping to come visit and get to play with dying yarn... possibly not till winter break? but i will keep you updated. *hugs*

They're so beautiful.

Think there will be any left to do when I come up for Thanksgiving (oh, look at me invite myself over, such class)?

You know you're always welcome :) These were died in big lots in a pot, although she also did a bunch of yarn with the sponge dying. I just didn't get to take pics of those. And don't worry - there's plenty more to be died.

And I can't believe that I spelled it "died" twice. *sigh* I was very tired.

You should see the variegated hand-dyed yarn! I'll see if I can get some pics of our booth at the Knitters' Fair this weekend.

Gorgeous! I was just talking to a poet friend about how sometimes we wish we could do visual art, instead of trying to reproduce in words what we see--and these colors and these textures are what I mean. Just to have something in your hands and visually see such rich colors side by side, or alone ... love it.

I bought my daughter a jigsaw puzzle of balls of yarn recently because ... mmm, just like these photos, warmth, vibrancy, something to nestle in.
