Woman overboard!

I went a little too far with the running around in the past few days, and ended up really crashing last night. However, Mark's mom (aka The Nana) and I wailed through some Christmas shopping, so there was a bright side.
Speaking of crashing,
We'd bought our tree from a garden shop that had the trees hanging suspended from the girders in their warehouse. Neat! It made it easier to get a 360 degree view of the tree, and it allowed the branches to dry off and start dropping. It also, as we discovered when we got it home and put it up, made the tree appear quite a bit taller than it really way. Duh-huh :) I thought it was lovely as it was, but Dar and her family neeeeed a taller tree, so we used an old bookcase flipped over on its side as a base and put the tree on that. Voila - tree is now a foot taller. Fill tree stand with water and voila redux - it becomes a handy-dandy watering hole for the cats. (Although why they love to drink out of a metallic, sappy, pine-tasting, needle covered water container is beyond me.)
So while I was out shopping with The Nana, the following happened. Holmes (aka Jabba the Cat)
was standing with his front legs on the bookcase, drinking from the tree stand. Pixel (aka Baaaaad Kitty)
snuck up behind Holmes and scared the crap out of him. Holmes jumped straight up in the air and landed in the tree. Pixel decided to join him. Tree topples. Water, cats, decorations, lights, go flying all the hell over the place. Tree stand takes out huge hole in bookcase as it crashes. Little Tree Who Wore Platform Shoes is now redecorated. And shorter.
Hopefully we'll have the Christmas shopping done by Friday, because the thought of hitting the stores on the weekend before Christmas is equal parts depressing and scarifying. Not that I don't expect Friday to be a shopping nightmare day, too. And besides, I still have wrapping to do.
I have been unsuccessfully trying to mail two lousy Christmas cards for a solid week now. I admit defeat. They were for my step-mother and my best friend who moved to NC. It just ain't gonna happen. And my brother's presents still haven't made it to me, so his stuff (and my SIL's) will be going out, oh, after the new year probably. Eh, you know, every so often you run into a holiday that just defies your best plans, and this is mine. I'm thinkin' we shall all survive.
I was so rundown yesterday that I ended up in bed by 7PM, and I figure I was asleep before 9PM. I also woke up at 3:30AM, so this should be an interesting day :) Right now I should grab a shower before the hordes start struggling their way up and out of bed. Hope y'all have a good one ahead of you.

2007-12-20 11:53 (UTC)Heh. I don't get why they drink the water either. Yesterday was Chester's annual physical and we asked the vet and he didn't know either. But said it wouldn't hurt 'em so, what's wrong with a little holiday indulgence?
I feel the same way about Christmas this year. Things will happen or they won't. And as I now have a cold, it'll be more likely in the "don't."

2007-12-20 23:20 (UTC)How is that Chester cat anyway? Did he stop with the peeing on the furniture? Is he anxiously awaiting Santa Kitty?

2007-12-20 23:23 (UTC)That sounds like an ingenious device that there crystal stuff, but it can't be much for the kitties, eh.

2007-12-21 16:40 (UTC)We leave for NYC on the 27th - we're so excited! A friend gave me an excellent guidebook yesterday, so we'll be pouring over it over the next few days, planning our adventures. I'll be taking lots of photos!
