It surprises me how easy it is for me not to post regularly. It's not that I don't have anything to say, more that I've grown too unaccustomed to forming the sentences to say it. Bad habit, that, and one that I'm planning on breaking.
In the meantime, I've had this jobs meme hanging around on my desktop for a while. I believe that it originally came to me through
malterre. Now keep in mind that these are only the jobs I can remember at the moment. Others may come to me as through the fog of ancient memory. Enjoy.
1.) What jobs have you had in your lifetime? (even the crappy summer jobs)
Factory worker (swing saw, drill)
Switchboard operator (on the old PBX corded phone systems)
Phone book deliverer
School bus driver
Office clerk (many, many times)
Statistical typist
Swimming pool attendant
Short-order cook (for an afternoon)
Gift wrapper
Supervisor/companion for a blind and deaf teenager
Cook at a summer camp
Youth worker at a home for runaways
Adjunct professor
Database administrator
Systems administrator
Production manager
Data entry clerk
Proofreader
Laboratory assistant at a blood bank
Retail clerk
Waitress
Beer pourer (it was a tavern),
Insurance coder,
Web mistress (waaaay back in the day),
Guest lecturer (feminist theology, violence against women)
Database conversion project manager
Youth worker at a school for the deaf (offered the job but didn't end up taking it)
German tutor
Teaching Assistant (American Intellectual History, American Sign Language)
And then there's the volunteer stuff . . .
2.) Which, if any, ended up being your career?
The computer stuff: sys admin and dba work.
3.) Which jobs did you love? Hate?
I loved any kind of teaching or training, loved working with data. I hated waitressing and working retail - pretty much anything having to do with dealing with people and their money. Let's just say that I don't have the personality for it, hmmm?
4.) Have you ever been fired? If you're comfortable with it, tell us about it...
Only from the factory job. And I wasn't fired for cause, I was let go at the end of my first week because I was scrapping too much material. (The job was sawing and drilling metal frames to assemble into storm windows.) What can I say? Those big saws and drills were scaring the crap out of me; there was hot metal flying everywhere.
5.) What would your dream job be?
I do believe I have it. Thank you, Dar :)
Hey, did y'all know that there's now a forum for Battlestar Galactica over at Televison without Pity? Join up! It's not going to get to stick around unless people come to participate. It's being run by Glark, so he's pretty cool about it all.
And speaking of BG - I got to see the new ep last night with
browncoat and his 'rents. Damn good show! One of the best on TV right now and certainly the best scifi to be around since the demise of my much-loved Firefly. Excellent writing, acting, visuals. I think I'm going to fall in love all over again with a TV show. Between this and Carnivale, my TV viewing is actually going to be a priority once more. (I think I can hear
hcwoodward giving a little cheer *g*)

2005-01-17 18:38 (UTC)eeee! This is so cool, I was very suprised when I found it. I don't usually hang out in the main show forums. When I first found TWoP Firefly had already been moved to a single thread so this is a new experience for me. lol
