maystone: (Four alpacas)
Dar has been out with the moms and the new babies off and on all of last night and today. She reports that the babies are doing very well; they've each gained a little weight, which is exactly what we want to happen. Cinnamon Girl isn't doing that well. She moans constantly and seems to be in pain. Dar gave her some meds for the pain, and now she's taking a well-deserved nap. Later we'll go out and give CG an enema. Joy for everyone concerned.

The Sad Tale of Cinnamon Girl

This is CG's second cria, but her first live birth. The first baby died during the birthing. Her knee got jammed up and she couldn't progress down the birth canal; we were at the ER with Dar at the time so we weren't able to help her. CG went through a horrible time with us and the vet trying to remove the dead cria and the afterbirth. (Even before that another vet had torn her rectum during a pre-natal exam. He was a cow vet and unused to dealing with small animals.)

When CG had this baby, it was cold and barely light outside. We whisked the baby away into the barn to warm her up and keep her from going into shock. Poor CG didn't know what was happening. She stayed outside and delivered the placenta. Dar went to look for her and found her crying over it, mourning what she thought was another dead baby. Dar carried the baby outside so CG could see her. Overjoyed alpaca! CG followed them back into the barn and from then on has just attached herself to her cria in the most endearing, protective way.

Dar thinks the problem with CG now has to do with that earlier torn rectum. While recovering from the first birth she'd had some problems in that area, so Dar is thinking it could be happening again. Plus having Adama and Valentino trying to mount her yesterday didn't help, I'm sure.

Wish us luck then. Oh, and we've named the crias. CG's little girl is Ripley (I've already taken to calling her Ripper), and Conchita's gray girl is Suki.

The new girls. )

I'm flaring like crazy today, which is to be expected after the last couple of days. I don't like it at all, but I can understand why it happened. Now I just need to get it all under control before Gertie delivers her cria. Possibly tomorrow.

She's about 30 hours old. We were a bit worried about her, but she did perk up. Now it's the mom, Cinnamon Girl, who has us concerned. She's in pain, and Dar isn't exactly sure why, but she's working on it.
