maystone: (Star and trees by semyaza)
I keep thinking that I've updated, and I haven't. I post a picture every day to [livejournal.com profile] pic365, and my tiny little brain reads that as having done an actual post with words and thoughts and rambling. My brain needs a jump start.

It's been pleasantly boring around here for the past few days. The temperatures have finally gone above freezing, and things are starting to melt. We have so much snow and ice packed on the ground and the asphalt that it's going to take a while for anything substantial to happen with that, but it's exciting to see a start anyway. I admit to having tried to help nature along by heading out with my trusty shovel and chopping/shoveling snow/ice where it's been weakened. I can see about a square foot of driveway now! Woo!

As I said - boring :)

[livejournal.com profile] darlong has been having problems with her shunt for the past few days, but happily it's not serious although it is painful for her. Fortunately it coincides with my asthma getting better, so we've swapped out the alpaca duties. I love how that works out. I spent over an hour out there this morning hacking away at the frozen hill of poo and urine that built up in the barn during that run of extreme cold and snow that we'd had. It was too cold and windy for the alpacas to go outside, so they used one half of the barn as a poo pile. Even though we have a heater on the side of the barn where they sleep and hang out, the temps were so extreme that the poo and pee froze solid very quickly. They didn't care, but we thought it was pretty gross, and we've been slowly scraping it out of there. It's almost completely cleared out now; all I need is a few more days of warmish weather, and I can hack through the rest of it.

My friend Carol was supposed to come visit next week from NC, but she's not going to be able to make it. She's actually in Buffalo this week visiting her daughter who's on break from grad school, but various things have conspired to get in the way of us getting together. I'm disappointed, but what are you going to do? To balance things out, some of the Torchicks should be heading our way on Friday. It'll be great to see them again. Now we just have to de-cat the guest room.

Speaking of cats, Pixel scared the crap out of me this morning. Herself, too, I think. We have a small bookcase backed up against the banister of the stairway that runs from the top floor to the basement; Pix likes to hang out there. She also likes to stroll along the banister rail, which gives us all conniptions. Today she was playing with Little Cat; Little took off on a run down the stairs, and Pix decided to chase her by running down the railing. Yeah, that worked out well. For a second she looked like Legolas sliding down the elepant's trunk; thankfully when gravity took over and she fell off, she fell onto the stairs close to her rather than falling down a complete story. Idiot kitten.

Time for me to settle in with the Camelid Quarterly magazine. Yay. Don't forget to turn your clocks ahead, guys. OK, I'll stop beig mom now :) I leave you with a haiku meme that I snurched from darling [livejournal.com profile] cajoje.
