25 February 2007 03:31The Audiofile section at Salon is a thing of wondrous goodness. I've picked up some great tunes on their free download section, including a live performance of Donny Hathaway's "What's Going On?" I used to own the album (yes, vinyl) that had the studo version of that song, and it and the song were among my favorites of all time. My album collection disappeared over the years, and most of that stuff has never made it to CD. Thank God for sites like Audiofile.
So, at the tone it is (TONE) 3:38AM. It's been a weird night. I was a bit off all day yesterday. I started getting weepy in the early evening, and I just called it quits around 7PM and slunk off to my room. Went to sleep around 9 but never slept longer than an hour after that. I woke up for real around 1AM with a trigeminal headache, because the only way you sleep through those is if you're unconscious or dead. I took some meds for that, and as I was sipping on some more tea I choked. Badly. That set of a bronchial spasm that ended up with me having to take some ventilin; between the adrenaline from not being able to catch my breath and the adrenaline from the ventilin - here I am. And I'm mighty glad to be here. No, really.
We finally got the camera situation straightened out, and it wasn't as anxiety producing as we feared it would be. Although the young woman at the Customer Service desk visibly blanched when she saw us approach and blurted out, "I remember you!" Heh. We explained everything (I'll spare you the recap), and we ended up getting a slightly more expensive camera but also a better one. It's a Canon PowerShot A710 IS. Most importantly, it's never been used. I've been looking over the manuals, and I've installed the download software; hopefully when I wake up later today I'll be ready to take some pictures and get back into Project 365.
Friday was the Battle of the Driveway. It took 4 1/2 hours to get my car out of the driveway, and then another hour to get Oliver's car out. The driveway is on an incline, it has many inches of packed snow and ice on it already, and Thursday we got hit with more high winds and blowing, drifting snow. Mark got the Jeep out, but he dug some deep ruts into the snow cover; my car? Got stuck in the ruts. It wasn't just the tires; the snow and ice jammed up the undercarriage so I was frozen in place. Which is why it took hours of shoveling and chipping away and moving the car up the driveway by inches (literally). At one point, Dar was lying on the driveway with a heat gun, trying to melt the snow/ice from under my car. Oliver ended up out there with us, and the three of us finally got it onto the road. I ended up towing his car out. And then when he was parking it on the road - he slid off into the ditch. Because it's nearly impossible to tell where the ditches start with this much snow cover; happily our neighbor came by and pulled him out with his truck, because my little Mazda wouldn't have been up to it. Before I parked my car on the road, I walked along the edge and shoveled a little ridge where the road ended and the ditch started, because that's the only way to differentiate. It is fucking insane. And now I'm getting myself all pissed again, so moving on . . .
We may be getting a break from these horribly cold temperatures, although it's hard to tell. The forecast changes every couple of hours: we'll be abover freezing on Wednesday; nope, make that Saturday; did I say Saturday? make that a week from Wednesday; oops, it'll be warmer tomorrow after all; uh-oh, no, it won't. It's ridiculous. But I figure it has to warm up at some point, right? The snow is so deep and so packed in some sections out by the barn, that we could literally step over the fence if we wanted to. I figure that it'll be June before it all melts.
Al Gore for President! We elected him once, we can do it again! (Just thought I'd throw that in.) Seriously, though, I hope he runs. He'd be crazy to get into campaigning now; better to wait and let the early runners eat each other, as they certainly appear to be doing. I wouldn't give you two cents for either Hillary or Obama. If Gore breaks my heart by not running (don't break my heart, Al!), I'll throw my support to Wes Clarke or John Edwards. I'm sure they'll be delighted to hear that.
Oh, I think Dar is up! Off to say good morning to her. And good morning to you all, too.
