15 December 2005
OK, by the numbers then.
1. Houseguests of the fun variety! Last Friday I made a dash to the airport to pick up
sparky77 (yay!) and then swung around into deepest, darkest Toronto to pick up
sffan (more yay!). I was hoping to get a glimpse of the fabled Simon and Elizabeth, but apparently they weren't receiving visitors. I'm more than inclined to believe at this point that they're mythical. As are Pico and Lexie. Seeing is believing, guys. Just sayin'.
sparky77 slept a lot.
2. Saturday
dumbphilomel joined us. (Still with the yay!) We celebrated
browncoat's birthday early with cake and booze (except phil had tea - because she's good). At some point phil decided that the what the world needs most is for a Muslim and a converted Jew to go Christmas caroling, so we're trying to make that happen. I figure what the hell: we're moving anyway - we can annoy the neighborhood all we want. Then she got all responsible and shit and went home so she could get up early and go to work instead of staying and partying with us. (Did I mention that she was good?)
sparky77 slept a lot.
3. Sunday Realtor Sue and family came over for
browncoat's birthday brunch. (Still early, btw.) More frivolity plus very yummy food. Realtor Sue and family left, and then
browncoat shepherded
sffan back to her digs to reunite with her mythical felines.
sparky77 slept a lot.
4. We celebrated
browncoat's actual birthday on Monday. Presents! Left-over cake. Still very scrumptious.
sparky77 still very sleepy.
5. Woke up
sparky77 on Tuesday and drove her back to the airport so she could fly back to Chicago. (Boo!)
6. Wednesday I embarked on Adventures in Canadian Healthcare. It was scary, children. I finally got my OHIP card (that's my provincial health coverage card) on Friday, but this was the first day that I had the time to try to put it to use. I'm on a regional waiting list to get a personal physician , so it's health clinics for me all the way until then. I really just needed to get my old prescriptions filled; I got copies of them from my doctor when I left the States, but that was a year ago. Time, she do fly. I was most anxious to get access to some high potency iron, because Canada treats iron as if it were, I don't know, morphine or something. You can't buy anything but tiny little dosages over-the-counter here, and thanks to the gastric bypass surgery, I need heavy duty iron or my body just won't absorb enough to make it count. Anyway. I went to one clinic where there was 1) a long line just to get to the counter to register, 2) a 3-hour wait after that to see a physician, and 3) no one who would do anything about what I needed anyway as I found out once I actually got to talk with someone. My next try was an urgent care clinic closer to home, and that was a completely different experience: no line, no waiting, and a doctor who wrote up all my prescriptions for me. Huzzah. I'll have to wait for a personal physician to get some blood work done and ask more specific questions about my health, but for now I'm just relieved to have the prescriptions that I need.
( Longish explication about the damn iron hunt or Why Do Canadians Fear Ferrous Fumarate? )
6. It's snowy and icy and we went out farm hunting anyway. Because we are mighty. Or foolish. Probably mighty foolish. The place we saw looks good. Very good. It's nothing fancy or shiny or spiffy; it's kind of plain and homey and has the feel of country about it. We're going back with
browncoat at some point when we can actually get a better feel for the property. Hopefully that doesn't mean we'll have to wait until April, because I gotta tell you, it's been snowing for days now without a sign of let-up.
7. Apprentice finale in less than 30 minutes. I figure he's either going to hire them both, or tell them both to take a hike. (Personally, I'd just go with Rebecca.) The Amazing Race while neither amazing nor an actual race this season had a satisfying conclusion. Still, the best part was the preview of next season. They actually leave North America! And do stuff! Man, I don't think they're ever going to live down the crapfest that was this season.

sparky77 didn't really sleep through her whole stay here. Unless she's very adept at walking and talking in her sleep. Which . . . you never know. So . . .
