maystone: (Gertie by Lee)

Dar just came back about 30 minutes ago. She thinks it was a stroke or a spinal embolism. When they found Finn he had collapsed outside in the snow. His temp was 94; normal temp is 101. She got it up to 96, but his hind legs are still paralyzed.

The Poots are bringing both Gertie and Finn back home. If he dies or has to be euthanized (either is highly likely), Dar wants them here in their own home. She doesn't want to give up hope until his temp is normalized, or as normalized as it's going to get. It's not looking great, though, guys.

I'll keep you updated.

It's really sad, Q. But at least Gertie is back home with her fam. It's great to see her out there again.

Awww...shoot.

These Alpaca critters seem to be fairly fragile, eh? I don't mean that as a stroke against 'em or anything, it just seems like there are SO many things that can go wrong with them.

I'm keeping Gertie and Finn in my thoughts...and the rest of y'all, too.

They're actually not all that fragile once they get past the first 24 hours. His mom had a very long pregnancy. and he had a rough delivery. He incurred neurological damage, and we think that's what this latest episode is all about.

It sounds like they're pretty prone to bad things, doesn't it, though :)

I guess that I'm just used to sturdy little horse-babies. heh. Little 'paccies are just so fairy-esque...such little tiny things...I guess that just puts them firmly in my mind as "fragile". They are adorable and seem pretty hardy as adults...so I guess it's just in my head that they are easily breakable. :)

I hope that your little one does well.

I'm gasping for words, but all I really want to do is get there and comfort the people and the alpacas. Poor wee boy. *hugs*

Thanks, honey. What is it about holiday weekends and alpacas, anyway? I wish you were here, too.

How was your weekend with your friend?
