I wish TCM hadn't run the movie so late; more people needed to see it earlier in the day! (It was all Hitchcock, for some reason...) For years, TNT ran the old, cut-up version around mid-day on the Fourth.
They ran the full version last night, but I couldn't make it all the way until 2AM. I saw most of it, though, and it cheered me. I love that musical.
The icon maker was doing them from memory, so that's why she got Virginia and New York confused. Still, every time I looked at the icon, I added "Courteously" in my head :)
No, no, she got it right..."Virginia abstains" is a Jefferson line from the movie. It's when Adams and Franklin are in Jefferson's lodgings trying to find out if he's completed the Declaration:
"Look at him, Franklin," says Adams, all sneery, "Virginia's greatest lover."
"Virginia abstains," is Tom's retort.
I love that movie! While watching the new John Adams miniseries (which is fantastic) I kept inserting 1776 lines, which drove Michelle crazy.
