Day 102 - Serenity

Because he never got around to posting it (and because he's way too humble about his own talent), I wanted to post the logo that [livejournal.com profile] browncoat created for our alpaca business. I just love it. I think it's unique and sophisticated and deceptively simple.

(Because of the lighting in my room and the fact that I didn't use a flash, the colors are off, but it's the design that I wanted y'all to see.)

It is. That's a Celtic design as the basis for the suri face, which I thought was all sorts of cool.

That's lovely. I really, really like it, and think it is quite perfect.

He did a fantastic job.

I keep forgetting to email you! I just wanted to say that we won't be home at all this weekend; the show is Saturday and there are seminars we've signed up for on Sunday. How about the weekend of the 21st?

You know, that's a great idea! You're so clever. And also awesome your own self :)

Is it not awesome? It encorporates the traditional Celtic symbols we saw at the old ruins at Knowth and the symbol for Longshadow (which many of you may not know is actually part of my family name).

Our husband is the greatest!

Hopefully he'll post a pic of it in the true colors that we'd chosen: cream background and a kind of muted army green. It's a lot prettier than I'm making it sound :)

I hope that you're feeling better today, sweetie.

Yeah, so do I. We'll have to see what we can do about that.

Hi! I'm Michelle from Rural Ruin and I just wandered on in. You raise alpacas? That's fabulous!! My husband and I are part of a community farming program and someone wants to get started on alpacas. There is one that is currently being housed in the barn and he has HUGE buck teeth. Is that normal? Great logo, by the way!

I admire you for moving way out to the country. That is what we want to do eventually, but Andrew (my husband) is finishing is MA in music at CIM so we bought closer the school. Have you ever been to Cleveland?

Anyway, I like your photographs and stuff. Do you mind if I add you as a friend?

Ad away :) I'll do the same, if you don't mind. We have some similar interest, and believe it or not, I've moved many more times than you have :)

You're in Ohio then? OH has a pretty big alpaca community from what I've been reading, so that's good for your friend who wants to start raising alpacas - lots of mentors available. Plus, I'd be happy to answer any questions that I can. We've only been in it for a year, but if nothing else, I can certainly deal with the newbie aspect of paca breeding :)

Our herdsire had enormous teeth, too. In his case it wasn't genetic, he just needed to have them trimmed back; he's still pretty young, and that happens sometimes. If it's genetic, he's not a good option to use as a herdsire; the bite isn't just unattractive, but if it's severe enough it can interfere with the alpaca's ability to chew, and that brings on a whole set of problems. Have your friend have a vet check him out, and while he's there, have his teeth filed down.

I love living in the country, love learning from the long-time farmers. And you know what? I didn't move until I was 56 :) There's plenty of time for you.

Nope, never been to Cleveland. Hmmm, come to think of it, I believe I may have spent the night on the way down from MA to KY. From your LJ, I guess I'm not missing much, eh.

Hi! Yeah, you're not missing too much in Cleveland, but there are some very pretty rural areas. Check out Conneaut sometime!

does it hurt them to file their teeth?

Apparently not - if it's done right, of course. The males also grow fighting teeth, and those definitely have to be taken down. The usual way is to use piano wire and saw them off that way. ::shudder:: You can go too deep, which is why it's best to have a pro or someone with lots of experience do it for you or teach you how. We had our guy (Iceman) lightly sedated, and everyone involved was a lot happier for it. BTW, sedation is not uncommon for procedures like that; we're also having everyone sedated for shearing this May; it really cuts down on their stress levels (especially suris), and since all of our girls are pregnant, we really don't want them to get overly stressed.
